Vernissage DDS 1992

The project was rejected by a majority of only 23,105 votes, but even more overwhelmingly by almost all the German-speaking cantons. The vote on the European Economic Area (EEA) on December 6, 1992 marked a turning point in Swiss foreign policy. 50.3% of voters were against Switzerland joining the EEA. The ballot that the President of the Confederation, René Felber, placed in the voting box in his commune of Saint-Aubin-Sauges on St. Nicholas Day certainly contained a strong yes. But the sovereign decided otherwise.

The vote on the EEA treaty 30 years ago is the focus of the Diplomatic Documents of Switzerland 1992, which the Dodis Research Center will publish on January 1, 2023. In addition, a wide variety of other topics to be discovered marked Switzerland’s international relations in 1992.

We are looking forward to celebrating the publication of the DDS 1992 together with our friends and all those interested. We would like to invite you to the vernissage on January 3, 2023, from 16:00 to 17:30 at the Federal Archives in Bern.
