With the recent publication of Diplomatic Documents of Switzerland on the history of internationalism 1863–1914, the Dodis research centre has completed the trilogy «Switzerland and the Construction of Multilateralism». Initiated in 2019, it will appear as a sub-series in the open-access publication series Quaderni di Dodis.
The trilogy began with a spark of magisterial enthusiasm for Dodis and an interest in the history of Switzerland’s multilateral involvement. To mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of the League of Nations in Geneva, Dodis published a volume in 2019 devoted to the history of Switzerland and the League of Nations between 1918 and 1946. 50 commented and edited documents and more than 400 other documents in the Dodis database provide an overview of the history of relations with the world’s leading organisation.
The edition on Switzerland and the United Nations, comprising 50 annotated documents dating from 1942 to 2002, was published just in time for the 20th anniversary of Switzerland’s accession to the UN on 10 September 2022. Nearly 2400 other documents are also linked in this thematic area in the Dodis database.
The first chronological volume, devoted to Switzerland and internationalism at the end of the 19th century, completes the trilogy and documents Switzerland’s involvement in international congresses, conferences, world exhibitions and the first international organisations through 50 documents with commentary in the print edition and almost 300 documents in the Dodis database.
It is particularly gratifying that the series has been brought to a close and honoured at the vernissage on 7 September 2023 in the presence of Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis – it was none other than he who spontaneously suggested this series of publications in 2018, during a visit to the Dodis research centre. Today, all the volumes in the series are available online in full text in Open Access.
