The free trade agreement with the European Economic Community strongly defines volume 25 (1970–1972). At the same time, preparations for the Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe were taking place. Through the international monetary crisis, the role of the Swiss franc and finance centre became more important. Alongside traditional topics such as relations with the «divided states», good offices and humanitarian aid, new subjects began to interest Swiss diplomacy, for instance environmental policy. A further aspect is the growing interdependence of home affairs and foreign policy. The ripples of the Middle East Conflict also reached Switzerland, through a series of terrorist attacks.
