Swiss-Diplo – A Global History of Swiss Diplomacy

The research centre Diplomatic Documents of Switzerland (DDS), an enterprise of the SAHS and centre of excellence for the history of Swiss foreign relations, is increasingly drawing interest from third parties. The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) is funding a research project undertaken by the University of Basel's Institute for European Global Studies, where Prof Dr Madeleine Herren is leading a team of three scholars researching Swiss diplomacy in a global perspective, 1848 to 1975.

«SOS Biafra» – New volume in the series «Quaderni di Dodis»

The newly published fifth volume of the series «Quaderni di Dodis» centres on Switzerland's foreign relations in the context of the Nigerian civil war, 1967–1970. «SOS Biafra» was the International Committee of the Red Cross's appeal to the public, in May 1968, to support the relief mission in the secessionist area, which was completely isolated.

Mit Betroffenheit hat die Forschungsgruppe der DDS vom kürzlichen Tod von Prof. em. Dr. Beatrix Mesmer erfahren. Als Professorin für Schweizer Geschichte an der Universität Bern und Präsidentin der Schweizerischen Gesellschaft für Geschichte hat sie die Entwicklung der historischen Wissenschaften in der Schweiz massgeblich geprägt.

«The Conference on Security and Co-Operation in Europe does not end with the ceremonial signing of the final act in Helsinki on August 1st of this year. In fact in many ways it is just beginning» stated a circular of the FDFA in October 1975. Nevertheless, it marks a milestone of European history, reached at that time. For Switzerland, it designated a decisive step in the opening of its foreign policy.

Die Diplomatischen Dokumente der Schweiz, das Schweizerische Bundesarchiv, das Europainstitut der Universität Basel und die Universität Zürich laden ein zur feierlichen Übergabe des Nachlasses des schweizerischen Generalkonsuls in Yokohama (Japan), Arnold Dumelin (1844–1905), an das Schweizerische Bundesarchiv und zur Aufschaltung einer Auswahl an Dokumenten des Nachlasses auf der Datenbank Dodis.

No less than the leaders of the Great Powers gathered in Geneva. On July 18 1955 the summit of the «big four» began: US-President Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Soviet Minister President Nikolai A. Bulganin as well as Antony Eden and Edgar Faure, the British and French Prime Ministers, convened in the international city.

Successful Start of

On June 19, the official kickoff event of the project took place at the Swiss National Library. At the event, almost fifty participants from areas like edition and database projects, libraries, archives and long-term projects of the Swiss Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHAS) were able to gather information on developments and functionalities of the web service.
